PPL Information Session

When I went to the Lehigh Career Fair back in September, one of the companies I talked to and was really interested in was PPL. PPL, formerly known as Pennsylvania Power & Light, is a huge electric utility company headquartered in Allentown, PA, not far form Lehigh. Since the career fair, I have been periodically emailing a few people from the company to keep in touch with them while I wait for the summer internship positions to be posted on their website. Yesterday, a few representatives came to Lehigh to hold an information session for all interested students, so of course I went! At first, I was a little concerned about what a civil engineer would do for an electric company, but the one rep assured us that they love to hire civil, mechanical, and chemical engineers as well as electrical. He told us that as long as you’re an engineer, you’re in! We were also informed that the interns get to work on real projects, not just shuffle papers around and get coffee for people. Later, I took a closer look at the papers they handed us and saw that one of the positions open to civil engineers is nuclear design. I’ve always been interested in the design aspect of civil engineering , so that definitely stood out to me immediately, and I think it would be so cool to be a nuclear engineer!

Also, I gave one of the reps my resume (he’s in the recruiting department for nuclear engineering), and he was very impressed with it. He told me that he was going to put it right in to HR! I can’t wait until the positions are posted online so I can apply for an internship with them!
