10 Weeks

10 Weeks

If you couldn’t guess from the picture and title – I have been accepted into the Lehigh In Germany Winter Program!! In exactly 70 days, I will be flying to Germany with one of my best friends from Lehigh (shoutout to Erinn) and we will be soaking up the culture of Munich! It has not really hit me yet that I will be going on this trip, or that it is actually so soon? I really can’t believe it but I am so excited!! Until then however, I have quite a few school-related business to attend to…..

The most recent addition to my “academic to-do list” is the Big Beam Competition for my Pre-Stressed Concrete class. The students in the class have split up into teams of 3, and our goal is to design a concrete beam (reinforced with steel) that will be able to withstand loading within the limits that the American Concrete Institute (ACI) states in their code. Lehigh has great resources on campus and is in close proximity to other off-campus companies, so we will actually be able to see our beams in physical form!

This contest is available to students across the nation, and there are prizes for the teams with the 1st and 2nd best design for their beams. In addition to the obvious safety rules of ACI Code, we also want to consider the economical aspect of our beam (save $$ but still be safe!). I am working with two male students (surprising that there are boys in engineering?) and I’m feeling really optimistic about the work we will have to present. Of course we all hope to win, but I also hope to learn some real-world concepts by seeing my beam made, rather than just designing on paper. Pictures to come later on in the semester about that!

About lusamantha14

I am currently a senior at Lehigh University pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering. My blog this semester will be about my last undergraduate year at Lehigh: academics, social events & unexpected day to day occurrences. I'm really excited to share my thoughts, stories, and advice with anyone reading, since I know that all students go through very similar experiences. I can't wait to explore all of the opportunities that the field of Civil Engineering has to offer & I'm excited to live out my last year at Lehigh to the fullest! View all posts by lusamantha14
